You Won't Catch Me Doing This During Eclipse Season

Issue #89

The Village Grimoire

A breakup. Firing my first employee. The expensive filming of an online course that completely tanked.

These are all things that happened in my life during eclipses.

I’m not an astrologer, but I know enough to understand that eclipses are often associated with endings, transitions, and, well--chaos.

Because of that, I personally don’t do spells or manifestation work during eclipse season. Astronomically, eclipse season is a roughly 35-day window that occurs when the sun and moon align closely enough for a solar or lunar eclipse to happen. In my practice, I view eclipse season as the time that encompasses the two 2ish weeks between the solar and lunar eclipses, and I add in a few days on each side for buffer. Either way, we're currently in an eclipse season.

I’m not here to tell you what you should or shouldn’t do with your own practice. But my personal experience has taught me that things have a tendency to unravel in unexpected ways for me during eclipse season. The examples I mentioned above all happened on eclipses. Although all of those things ultimately needed to happen, the way they unfolded isn’t something I’d choose to experience again.

Knowing what I know about energy and manifestaion and having those eclipse experiences, a few years back, I decided I wouldn't do any spellwork on eclipses. And because I’m someone who likes to build in a little extra buffer time, I choose to extend my spell-casting pause beyond just the days of the actual eclipses and honor the entire time between the solar and lunar eclipse.

That doesn’t mean I put my practice on hold. There are still plenty of things I continue to do during eclipse season, including:

Divination

Ancestral veneration

Tending to my Mercury altar and money bowl

Making eclipse rainwater if the weather allows (which can be wonderful for transmutation spells)

Using my ritual oils and sprays, as I do daily

Gathering with other witches and magickal souls

Making progress on my witchy TBR list

So trust me--I still keep plenty busy!

I do occasionally host classes and events during eclipse season as well, although I tend to keep them to a minimum and/or intentionally work with the eclipse themes rather than against them.

This season, I have two eclipse events happening in Worcester, MA: Under the Eclipse: A Transformation Circle on August 15 and Eclipse Clarity Sessions on August 16.

If you’re looking for insight and support around changes that are already unfolding in your life--or changes you feel called to make but aren’t quite sure how to navigate--these events may be exactly what you need.

And finally, I have something big coming up for The Village Coven next month. I’m not sharing all the details just yet, but I’ll say this: If you love online education, community, and a really good deal, you’re going to want to pay attention.

What’s being added is a big expansion of what the Coven offers, and current members--as well as those who join as Supporters before Mabon--will be locked into a very special low rate for quite some time. More details coming soon.

Thanks for being here at The Village Grimoire.

Fall magic

The Village Grimoire There's a point every year when I can really feel the Wheel beginning to turn. The days are getting shorter (😢), the trees are beginning to shed, and I always notice a subtle shift in the collective energy. And if we pay attention, we may notice that shift within ourselves too. Fall can bring with it a desire to retreat a little. To spend more time at home, become more selective about where we put our energy, tend to our altars, cook something comforting, or just rest...

Hearth magick

A few days from now, we’re gathering for Ask a Witch: Hearth Magick & House Spirits. If you’ve been curious about living a more magickal life but aren’t quite sure where to begin, this is a lovely place to start. You don’t need a dedicated altar, a cabinet full of herbs, or years of magickal practice. Your home and your everyday surroundings are already places where magick can happen. In this live, one hour Zoom session, we’ll explore hearth magick, house spirits, and the ways our homes can...
