There's Something About October

The Village Grimoire

I've lived in five states, four of which are nowhere close to the others, and all of which had a very different feel in October. But regardless of whether I was sunning myself in West Palm Beach, going on hayrides in central Massachusetts, or feeling the collective relief that came with the end of that year's heavy humidity in the Lowcountry, one thing was always present: a feeling of magick in the air.

The months of the year have very distinct personalities or vibes to me, no matter which state I'm in. March feels hopeful and almost childlike. July feels like it's buzzing. And October feels like the spirit world and the magick of traditions from across the ages have entered the chat.

Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the dark half of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, is a favorite of many witches. So much so that many refer to it as the Witches' New Year. It's a time to honor ancestors and loved ones who have passed, turn inward and reflect, strengthen your energetic protection, and more. And as I shared in last October's Samhain newsletter , many Halloween traditions can be traced back to Samhain.

I don't know about you, but that October magick feels palpable, especially as we get closer to Samhain. And obviously, I can't leave that untouched! I'm teaching Samhain Rituals: Mini Class online on October 19 and hosting The Village Gathers: Samhain in Charleston on October 28.

Whether or not I see you at the class or gathering, I hope this month is magickal for you in the best way. I hope it helps you welcome warm memories of loved ones who have passed and fosters a greater sense of connection to those in your bloodline who came before you (at least the ones you want that connection with). I hope it gives you a chance to take stock, prepare for the end of the year, and connect with like-minded souls.

Thanks for being here at The Village Grimoire.

Lunar magick

The Village Grimoire I admit that I sometimes take things for granted. Like how friggin' cool the moon is, for starters. Up until maybe five years ago, I didn't give the moon much thought. Sure, I'd sometimes notice a full moon or what looked like no moon during the new moon phase, but that was about it. Then I got a book on lunar magick, and I started paying attention. That's when I started to realize I typically felt drained around full moons, and full of more ideas than usual when it was a...
