Between Two Worlds

Samhain (most commonly pronounced "SAH-wen") is the reason for the season. (The Halloween season, that is.) Samhain is a Celtic pagan holiday said to have started 2,000+ years ago. It was a major festival honoring the time between the lighter half of the year (summer) and darker half of the year (winter).

For the ancient Celts, this was a sacred time marking both an ending and a beginning. The harvest was complete, and it was time to prepare for the long, cold months ahead. It was also believed that during Samhain, the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead grew thin, allowing spirits and ancestors to visit.

Many of today’s Halloween traditions trace their roots back to ancient Samhain customs:

  • Costumes & Disguises: People wore animal skins or masks to confuse or ward off wandering spirits.
  • Jack-o’-lanterns: Originally carved from turnips and lit with embers to guide friendly spirits--or scare away unfriendly ones.
  • Trick-or-Treating: Inspired by “mumming” or “souling,” when villagers went door-to-door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for food.
  • Bonfires: Large community fires were lit for protection and purification, with hearth fires at home rekindled from the sacred flames.
  • Divination Rituals: Apples, nuts, and mirrors were used in fortune-telling games to glimpse the future, especially around love and marriage.

As modern witches and spiritual practitioners, Samhain remains a powerful moment to honor our ancestors, release the old, and set intentions for the new year ahead.

If you're in Charleston, SC and want to celebrate Samhain with a group of like-minded souls, join us for Whispers Through the Veil: A Samhain Gathering, an evening of remembrance, reflection, and renewal in Charleston. We’ll honor the turning of the wheel and the magic that lives between the worlds.

The Village Grimoire I've lived in five states, four of which are nowhere close to the others, and all of which had a very different feel in October. But regardless of whether I was sunning myself in West Palm Beach, going on hayrides in central Massachusetts, or feeling the collective relief that came with the end of that year's heavy humidity in the Lowcountry, one thing was always present: a feeling of magick in the air. The months of the year have very distinct personalities or vibes to...

Lunar magick

The Village Grimoire I admit that I sometimes take things for granted. Like how friggin' cool the moon is, for starters. Up until maybe five years ago, I didn't give the moon much thought. Sure, I'd sometimes notice a full moon or what looked like no moon during the new moon phase, but that was about it. Then I got a book on lunar magick, and I started paying attention. That's when I started to realize I typically felt drained around full moons, and full of more ideas than usual when it was a...
